Free Vintage Bluebell Shawl Pattern

Classic.  Elegant.  Vintage.  These are just a few words that could be used to describe this pattern.  Starting with this retro Bluebell Shawl, take a journey back in time, rediscovering the patterns our ancestors worked on and passed to future generations.

We will seek to post more vintage patterns over the coming months.







Shawl

This free pattern originally published in Ponchos and Shawls, Book No. 967.
PATONS BLUEBELL
"patonized"
Shawl (92 ins. wide, 24 ins. deep): 19 balls
Fringe: 6 balls

NEEDLES—Milwards Circular Knitting Pin, 1 No. 8.
Milwards Tapestry Needle for sewing seam.
5 M/M (No. 6) Milwards "Disc" Crochet Hook for fringe.

SHAWL

CENTER PIECE
Using No. 8 Circular Knitting Pin, cast on 392 stitches.
1st row—K.2 tog., knit to last 2 sts., slip 1, K.1, p.s.s.o.
Rep. 1st row until 2 sts. remain, turn, K.2 tog.
Fasten off.


EDGING
Using No. 8 Circular Knitting Pin, cast on 571 stitches.
** 1st row—K.1, * y.fwd., slip 1, K.1, p.s.s.o., K.1, K.2 tog., y.fwd., K.1, rep. from * to end.
2nd row—P.2 tog., purl to last 2 sts., P.2 tog.
3rd row—K.1, slip 1, K.2 tog., p.s.s.o, * y.fwd., K.3, y.fwd., slip 1, K.2 tog., p.s.s.o., rep. from * to last st., K.1.
4th row—As 2nd row. **
Rep. from ** to ** 23 times. (427 sts.)
Next row—K.197, (K.3 tog.) 11 times, K.197. Cast off.

MAKE UP
Using a flat seam, sew shaped edges of center piece to cast-off edge of edging.

FRINGE
Wind yarn round a piece of cardboard 7 ins. wide and cut along one side. Wrong side facing, using 6 strands of yarn and 5 M/M (No. 6) Hook, fold yarn in half and draw a loop through a st. at cast-on edge of edging, pull ends through loop and tighten. Rep. around cast-on edge in every 3rd st.
